Karl Elderkin founded Athenian in 1997. As Managing Partner of the firm, he has overall responsibility for all of its business. He has 18 years of IT / Life Sciences venture capital investing experience and a further seven years of relevant experience in engineering, manufacturing, capital investments and strategy management consulting.

From 1989 until founding Athenian, Karl was co-head of Generics Asset Management (“GAM”) the London-based venture capital arm of Generics Group, PLC (“Generics”), a technology consulting organization located in Cambridge, UK. As co-head of GAM, he shared responsibility for all aspects of that venture fund's management and its investment management activities, which covered a range of technologies and industries, including electronic communications and medical devices. He began his career at Generics as a management consultant.

From 1983 to 1987, Karl was with Texas Instruments, located in Massachusetts as a manufacturing engineer and capital investment manager.


Karl holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, with international studies at the London Business School.startaffHe currently serves on the board of ECNext, Inc. He has previously served on the boards of Intellispace, Alloptic, Chaparral Network Storage, Advanced Digital Internet, and Analect Instruments.
