Brett Byers joined VCFA in 1998 to start VCFA's San Francisco office. Brett focuses primarily on originating, evaluating and negotiating investments for VCFA's funds, which purchase venture capital and other private equity investments in other funds and in companies on a secondary basis from existing investors needing early liquidity. Brett has led has many transactions with venture capital firms, including re-structuring of funds to give some investors liquidity, to provide additional capital to the funds, and to modify terms of the fund to best align interests of the fund managers with the fund investors. He has led many transactions where VCFA provided liquidity to investors in venture capital funds by buying their interests in the funds, where VCFA provided liquidity to venture funds by buying their interests in portfolio companies, and where VCFA has given liquidity to co-investors of venture capital funds such as strategic investors or founders. VCFA also has provided capital for new venture capital funds in conjunction with a secondary purchase.
Prior to joining VCFA, Brett was General Counsel and Vice President, Investor Relations of 8x8, Inc., a publicly traded semiconductor manufacturer. He also served as a corporate and securities attorney with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, California and with the New York office of Mayer, Brown & Platt, serving the venture capital and buyout community.
Brett began his career as a designer of VLSI semiconductors and computer systems with Raytheon Company's Missile Systems Division and Kendall Square Research, a massively parallel processor supercomputer maker.
He received a BS in electrical engineering from Cornell University and a JD from Yale Law School.
Brett is a board observer on several of VCFA's portfolio companies.
